Open position: one-year Post Doc, NMR and electrochemistry

LPMN wants to explore whether chirality induced spin selectivity (CISS) can be used to hyperpolarize nuclear spins in an electrochemical environment. Success would constitute a major breakthrough in achieving hyperpolarization of solutions at high fields and room temperature. The candidate would be part of a collaboration with the group of Prof. R. Naaman at the Weizmann institute, Israel, and work full time at EPFL with the three group members involved in electrochemistry and ESR, and with those working on various aspects of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization.

Introduction to the field of the project

There is mounting experimental evidence, sustained by theoretical models, indicating that chiral molecules grafted on electrodes act as spin filters. This in itself is a fascinating topic of research, merging concepts of solid-state physics, spintronics and electrochemistry. Provided the right circumstances can be created, the electrochemical polarization of electron spins can lead to a nuclear spin polarization which is well beyond its thermal equilibrium value by means of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), resulting in enhanced NMR signals.

Tasks and projects

  • Determine what geometrical cell arrangement is suitable for this experiment,
  • Adapt accordingly our flat probe technology to run NMR and electrochemistry simultaneously,
  • Establish what electrolyte and redox couple will work best,
  • Work on spin-dependent charge transfer processes at functionalized semiconducting electrodes,
  • Collaborate with the DNP group,
  • Characterize the signal enhancement obtained by this method.

Profile required for this position

  • A PhD in physics, physical chemistry or material science,
  • Hands-on experience with NMR,
  • Experience in electrochemistry, preparing and handling free radicals,
  • Autonomous and proactive working style is essential in view of the short funding period,
  • Ease in working in a team,
  • Languages: Fluent in English, French optional.

Contract

Funding for this position is limited to one year.  Planned starting date: Jan. 1, 2018.

An application containing a CV and a motivation letter can be sent to jean-philippe.ansermet@epfl.ch .
