This is a project at the research group of Experimental Otorhinolaryngology (ExpORL), Dept. Neurosciences, which is part of the University of Leuven. The overall goal of this project is to capture, via neural EEG-responses, how natural speech is processed in persons with aphasia, potentially leading to novel diagnostic applications. Leuven is located at the center of Belgium, in the heart of Europe. The research at ExpORL is aimed at improving hearing and communication skills of persons with hearing or language impairment. It covers the entire communication chain, including research on: * Neural correlates of speech perception * Neural plasticity during language (re)acquisition * Auditory and speech processing in hearing impaired persons * Developmental and acquired language impairments * Signal processing for acoustical and/or electrical hearing instruments The research at ExpORL is strongly multidisciplinary, consisting of about 40 researchers from a variety of backgrounds (engineering, audiology, medicine, psychology, speech pathology,...) . In particular, related to this project, there is expertise in multi-channel brain potential recordings, signal processing, source localisation, state-of-the-art MRI techniques as well as psychophysical experiments and cognitive language tests.
An EEG analysis technique has been developed that can capture, at least in neurological healthy persons, how natural speech is processed at each of the different linguistic components, resulting in a subject-specific language profile. In this project, we aim to apply this neural tracking technique in aphasia. This will allow to identify language deficits and to determine individual language profiles for persons with aphasia. In addition, based on source localisation, it will provide information on whether neural restoration or compensation mechanisms are used during language recovery. Using ecologically valid stimuli (natural speech) to assess the different components of the language processing chain has high clinical application potential for diagnosing aphasia.
Master degree (with high grades) in (neuro)psychology, speech and language pathology, cognitive neuroscience, biomedical engineering or related disciplines
Good English and Dutch proficiency (data collection is in Dutch)
Good programming skills (or at least high willingness to learn)
Experience with conducting EEG experiments and/or signal processing are a strong plus
Strong interest in language and cognitive neuroscience
An inquisitive and creative mind, good problem solving skills
Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team
Being a team player
