Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and the most popular city for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries – 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.
Where you’ll work:
The Department of Computing and Maths is a large facility with more than 65 staff. It is organised into two divisions – Computing and Mathematics – that between them have more than 1500 students. The School is particularly renowned for its sector-leading degree apprenticeship programmes, built on established links with a wide range of employer partners, and is attracting a growing number of master’s students. Within the School, the Centre for Advanced Computational Science (CfACS) is one of 13 University Centres for Research and Knowledge Exchange and enjoys an exceptional international reputation.
About the role:
Taking a significant leadership role within the Centre, you will drive forward our commitment to excellence in Computational Science. We will look to you to shape the Centre’s strategic direction and provide mentoring and career development to a team of 40 researchers spanning data science, machine intelligence, complex systems, smart infrastructure, human-centred computing, and computational modelling & fluid analysis. At the same time, you could choose to specialise, for instance, in software development, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, networking or cyber security as you lead research activity, control significant budgets and build on a growing portfolio of funding research, including two recent EPSRC New Investigator Awards and investment from the EU, NERC and Innovate UK.
Alongside holding a computing-related PhD or equivalent qualification, you will naturally be fully versed in leading-edge developments in computational science, passionate about emerging technologies and determined to enhance our student experience. Equally importantly, you will possess the gravitas to speak at high-profile conferences and produce a steady stream of peer-reviewed publications – and you will be ready to make your mark on everything we do.
To arrange an informal discussion regarding the role, please contact Dr. Darren Dancey, Head of the Department of Computing and Maths, email@example.com
