The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The University of Gothenburg promotes equal opportunities, equality and diversity.
At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv), we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics, conservation and combinations of these fields in order to understand past and present ongoing evolutionary processes and the impact of anthropogenic changes on the environment. The strategy of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences is to foster strong internationally networked research and to promote excellence in teaching. More information is available on the website: https://bioenv.gu.se/english
The department of Biological and Environmental sciences is taking a strategic initiative in the overarching theme “consequences of environmental factors on biological systems”. The aim is to further explore how nature responds to current changes in the environment and human activities and further how negative effects can be mitigated. BioEnv consists of several vital research groups and well established centers (GGBC, FRAM, SWEMARC) with relevance for this wide field of research.
The department of Biological and Environmental sciences is looking for five new lecturers in animal ecology, zoological systematics, zoological physiology, environmental science with ecotoxicology focus, and biodiversity.
Biodiversity treats the variation in the plethora of living organisms on earth (systematic taxa or populations), which may encompass the functional, genetic, taxonomic and geographic variation of these. Biodiversity research explores for instance the phylogenetic relations between life forms, environmental factors that benefits the arise of biodiversity and/or how diversity in itself affects the function of ecosystems. The department hosts internationally prominent research in the subject. In association with department is the “Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Centre” (www.ggbc.gu.se) that coordinates research and other activities in biodiversity and conservation biology. Through this centre there is access to several large biological collections spanning wide areas of the world and the tree of life.
We are recruiting a senior lecturer in the field to strengthen the department’s research in biodiversity. The duties include teaching and to develop an independent research program in biodiversity. The research program should be generally in line with the research themes at the department and you are expected to develop cooperation with other research groups at the department. You are expected to apply for external grants, build and lead your own research group and supervise PhD students. The job assignments include teaching on the first cycle and advanced level mainly within the biology program, but also on for example the environmental science program. Courses are given in both Swedish and English. You are expected to teach primarily in the area of biodiversity on the first and second cycle level. This entails, among other things, teaching the basic systematics and biodiversity. In addition to lectures and other exercises, course responsibility is also included. Supervision of diploma student projects in biology and environmental science is also included in the tasks. As a part of a larger team of lecturers, you are also expected to take an active part in the development and renewal of the teaching with regard to both form and content.
Some administrative duties are also part of the job assignments as well as collaborations within academia and with the larger society.
Candidates without formal university-level didactics training should participate in courses for higher education teaching provided by the university within two years of hiring.
The successful candidate is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses to learn Swedish as a second language.
The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.
Eligible candidates should hold a PhD degree or equivalent foreign degree in a subject area relevant for the position and have shown great skill in teaching. Ability to teach in English or Swedish (the latter within two years of appointment) is a requirement.
The assessment of applicants will primarily be based on scientific and didactic proficiency that are equally weighed in the assessment. Scientific proficiency should be documented in the form of scientific publishing, participation in scientific conferences, ability to obtain external grants and experience in scientific mentoring. Teaching proficiency should be documented through experience of academic teaching and supervision including production of teaching material and similar. The applicants’ personal ability to cooperate internally and externally is also taken into account in the assessment. In addition, proficiency in cooperating with society and inform about research to the national and international public is taken into account.
In conclusion, in the academic appointment, the applicant that show, after assessment of proficiency and developmental potential, the best prerequisites to carry out the tasks included in the position, cooperate with other staff and contribute to a positive development is to be chosen. The combined assessment will also entail how the applicants’ merits and plans contribute and strengthen the department.
