Tenure track Assistant Professor in Weathering and Soil Development

Introduction

The University of Lausanne is a higher teaching and research institution composed of seven faculties where approximately 14’300 students and nearly 3’800 collaborators, professors, and researchers work and study. Ideally situated along the lake of Geneva, near Lausanne’s city center, its campus brings together over 120 nationalities.

Presentation

The Faculty of Geosciences and Environment at the University of Lausanne seeks to appoint an

Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Weathering and Soil Development

at the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST).

The position will focus on processes in the critical zone that link the impact of weathering to the Earth’s climate and to the evolution of landscape and biomass. Research approaches that integrate different temporal and spatial scales to identify mechanisms of soil development and the quantification of rates and fluxes involved in weathering processes are highly recommended. We look for a candidate who would complement current expertise in IDYST (Aqueous and Isotope Biogeochemistry, Biogeosciences, Geo- and Thermochronology, Geomorphology) and who has the potential to establish collaborations with the Institute of Earth Sciences and the Institute of Geography and Sustainability.

Information

The appointment is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure track (possibility of tenure and promotion to Associate Professor within 5-6 years). An appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor may be considered for more senior candidates who would advance the Faculty's objectives regarding equal opportunities between men and women and the Faculty’s strategy regarding the recruitment of professors (see www.unil.ch/gse under “La Faculté -- L’égalité à la FGSE”, point 2.2 of the action plan).

Expected start date: August 1st, 2018 or to be agreed upon

Contract length: 6 years, tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor expected after 5-6 years
Activity rate: 100%
Workplace: University of Lausanne, quartier Mouline, Geopolis building

Your responsibilities

The successful candidate will join the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST) and have an active research program with external funding, He or she will teach courses in the Bachelor of Geosciences and Environment, contribute to the Faculty’s masters programs, including the MSc of Biogeosciences and will supervise masters and doctoral students.

Your qualifications

Candidates need to demonstrate an ability to conduct research of high quality, to obtain competitive research grants and to publish in international scholarly journals, combining research in areas of weathering, soil development, biogeochemical cycles and landscape evolution. An aptitude for teaching and for supervising master’s and doctoral theses is required.

A good command of both French and English is desirable. If French is not the native language, the ability to teach in French has to be acquired within two years of the appointment.

What the position offers you

The Faculty of Geosciences and Environment is a dynamic faculty founded in 2003offering state-of-the-art equipment, incentives for projects and excellent working conditions. It is divided into three research institutes (earth surface processes, earth sciences, and geography and sustainability) that collaborate at the intersection of bio-physico-chemical sciences and social sciences (see www.unil.ch/gse). The Institute of Earth Surface Dynamicsfocuses on studies of environmental processes at the Earth’s surface within four principle domains: the cryosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and the lithosphere. This includes research topics covering ecology, biogeochemistry, geomorphology and hydrology. There is a significant focus on fundamental science, but with a strong linkage to human impacts, and hence the Anthropocene, notably the human impacts upon aquatic and soil environments.
